The city of Mumbai in India was formally known as Bombay.  Mumbai is the largest city in the country and is the capital of the Maharashtra state.

Mumbai was originally a group of 7 islands on the Konkan coast of India. These islands were joined up into what was known as Bombay. The island of Salsette was then joined to form the Greater Bombay area.

The island was in turn joined with the neighboring island of Salsette to form Greater Bombay. The present population of the city is seventeen million and growing. It is one of the world’s largest cities and one of India’s major ports. The city is a commercial, business and industrial center. Mumbai is home to the Indian film and television industry – Bollywood.

The city is a cosmopolitan combination of extreme wealth mirrored in the fine shopping, the glamorous restaurants and the five star hotels Mumbai. There are other areas of the city that suffer from poverty and the effects of this poverty. However the growth of education in Mumbai means that the Indian workforce is much more educated and is becoming a major player in the industrialized world.

Newcastle in the North of England

Posted by Dylan on November 6, 2008

Newcastle is a major city in the north of England. It lies on the River Tyne near the Scottish border.  Its history reflects its position and it has seen much in the way of wars and struggles with the Romans, Vikings and Scots.  On the south bank of the Tyne lies the city of  Gateshead.

The Newcastle area is steeped in history.  From the Roman times it has been a trading and commercial center.  During the industrial revolution it became famous for coal, steel and shipbuilding.  Nowadays most of this industry had disappeared for the area.  Today the city is known as a commercial service oriented center.  Newcastle has many major stores, restaurants and bars.  Its nightlife is also popular amongst the younger generation.

Newcastle is an important health and medical center for the North east of England.  This includes modern healthcare facilities such as the Newcastle General Hospital, Royal Victoria Hospital, Newcastle cosmetic surgery, and Freeman Hospital.

The city has much beautiful architecture to appreciate.  This includes an ancient castle; as well as a wonderful quayside featuring waterfront bars and galleries.  Newcastle has many festivals and events held during the year that are very popular with tourists.
