Ferrari’s in Dubai
Posted by Brody on July 29, 2009I was having breakfast at the restaurant in one of the Four Star Hotels Dubai has when I over heard a conversation coming from the booth behind me. From what I could here there were two Dubain’s sitting behind me really having a lively conversation. I tried not to ease-drop but this one man’s voice was hard to not listen to, he wasn’t loud per se, but he was engaging. It sounded like he was telling a joke, but the story kept going, I had to listen to the whole thing. I just hope no one could tell that that’s what I was doing, listening in on someone else’s conversation, but it really was a good story, so I’m glad I did.
He was telling his friend that when he was in New York City for a couple of years, but still doing business in Dubai, that he walked into a bank in New York and asked for a loan officer. He proceeds to tell the loan officer that he needs to borrow $5,000 because he’s going to Dubai for a few weeks on a business trip. The loaner officer tells him that he’ll need some sort of collateral for the loan. The Dubai man hands over his keys to a brand new Ferrari parked out on the street not far from the bank. He then hands over the title and any other documentation the bank needed to verify, the Ferrari was his. So, the loan officer accept the Ferrari as security. He said by the time he received the $5,000 from the bank, a bank employee had already driven the $250,000 Ferrari to the bank’s underground garage and parks it there, keeping it safe. The Dubai man comes back to the bank after 2 weeks and repays the loan of $5,000 plus the interest of $16.00. The loan officer then preceeds to tell the Dubai man that he was curious as to why the Dubai man needed the loan, because through more investigating, the bank found out that the Dubai man was a millionaire. So, the loan officer ask the Dubai man why he needed to borrow the $5,000? The Dubai man laughs and told the loan officer that ‘Where else in New York can one park a precious car for two weeks and only pay $16.00 and expect the Ferrari to be in good condition and still be in the parking lot!’
I laughed at hearing this so loud that it was obvious that I was listening in on their private conversation, but I didn’t care. What a beautiful story, and so true.
