Consumer Stress and Customer Service

Posted by Brody on September 28, 2009

When adequate customer service becomes an issue for a business it can actually cause greater destruction and financial impacts than what is immediately acknowledged. When businesses become financially strained corners are often cut and sometimes effective customer service is one of the first things to go. This actually corresponds to a personal tendency of many people. When life becomes overly stressful or demanding, personal care aspects are often the first thing people neglect. This has compounding effects on both the personal level and the professional, and neglecting customer service needs can often signal the end of many struggling businesses. Steven Barbarich is fully aware of the importance of excellent customer service, and also has a personal commitment to it. Caring about the needs and satisfaction of a customer is a rare skill, and it is also one that can carry a business through troubling economic times.

It is important as a business person to remember that when the economy causes struggle to your industry, it is also wrecking havoc with the lives of consumers. Making major purchases can become an even greater stress than what it is in easier economic periods. When the purchase is made online through an Internet based company, this stress can become elevated to the point of anxiety. When this is the status a consumer brings into the purchase, maintaining a calm and respectful perspective on the part of the business is absolutely essential. And regardless of the fact a particular business may be struggling, when dealing with a client, their needs must be acknowledged as coming first. And the stress the business may be feeling should not be projected onto the consumer. This is actually easier than many people realize, and often times simply requires a timely response to inquiries and questions and providing a friendly voice to handle major transactions. Many times the consumer is looking for reassurance to their concern, and an appropriately handled transaction can turn a stressful consumer event into a positive purchase encounter.

Two person hot tub or larger?

Posted by Brody on September 28, 2009

My wife and I have been discussing getting a hot tub. Actually we have decided to get one and we know where it will go. Space is not an issue because we have a huge back yard, there is plenty of room. I am pushing for a two person hot tubs and she wants us to get one that is much larger. I would like to go with a smaller tub for several reasons I tell her. The smaller tub would be quicker to empty, clean and refill, easier maintenance. A smaller tub would not take as long to heat up when refilled. The water usage would be less and really the main reason is I do not want to be soaking in out hot tub with her family.

I mean really, what kind of a relaxing experience would it be to be soaking in the hot tub with your wife and her mother. And believe me if the tub is big enough in any way shape of form my mother in law will be right over here joining us. Now it is not like I don’t like her, is is a fine mother in law, but even from a mother in laws perspective, she must be able to see the unpalatable a son in law would have for soaking in the same hot tub with her and his wife. Well I am not sure my mother in law will get it and the only way I see us enjoying the hot tub in peace and private by ourselves is to limit the size of the tub thus giving her no choice but not to come over and soak with us. So I guess I will stick to my guns on the smaller hot tub and hopefully my wife will come around to my point of view.

Wind Turbine Picks up Speed

Posted by Brody on September 28, 2009

It’s not a new idea to harvest the wind to generate electricity; the wind turbine was created in 1888 by Charles F. Brush in order to do just that. Enough energy was produced with these early turbines to supply one to two homes. Today, large commercial scale wind turbines will produce approximately 3 megawatts of electricity or more and power up to 750 homes in the United States. A dramatic growth in this industry has recently popped up in the U.S., along with an increased wind power capacity of 27 percent. According to the American Wind Energy Association, an additional increase of 26 percent is expected this year. Enthusiasm for small-scale wind turbines is on the rise, too.

Residential wind turbines were established and commercialized around the 20′s in the U.S. and became very popular and wide spread, but then the Rural Electrification Administration extended electric lines to most of the remoter areas in the 30′s and 40′s, which reduced the necessity of wind turbines. The oil crises of the 70′s brought back a flurry of renewed interest in residential wind turbines and the power they produce, tax credits and incentives helped spur the industry, but those supports ended in the 80′s.

Now, in the new century, interest in residential wind power has rebounded. Recent growth in wind turbine companies attribute utility rebate programs and a growing need for cleaner energy technology. Many others in the wind turbine industry say the reason for the increased number of financial incentive programs is to help reduce the very high initial costs associated with purchasing and installing a wind turbine. Another factor in the increase is because people simply want to do the right thing concerning the environment; they are looking for way to make a difference.

So, these days, there are hopes with the residential wind turbine industry to the passing of legislation, which would establish a federal tax credit for people who purchase a wind turbine; an immediate benefit to taxpayers and will aid in driving down the price of wind turbines to due an increase in manufacturing.

Dynamics of Customer Service

Posted by Brody on September 28, 2009

Have you ever been in the position of feeling like you are receiving poor or inadequate customer service? It is almost guaranteed that everyone who reads that question will respond in the affirmative. That is an extremely distressing statistic when it seems that excellent costumer service has become a major priority with businesses. Yet the circumstance remains that most people have encountered at least one service person who has made them feel as if they are a bother to them and have less than adequately handled the issue or situation, or even the simple service they are there to provide. Steven Barbarich has had his share of disappointing experiences with businesses and inefficient customer service and has made this one of his company’s main priorities.

It is an extremely rare, but also an extremely respected and successful business that actually invests in their consumer’s well being and satisfaction. And while this is true, various perspectives on customer service seems to be everyone’s intention and commitment. This invites the question of what could possibly be going wrong when consumers are increasingly dissatisfied with service and service providers seem to be committed to quality care. Part of the answer may be as simple as a basic misunderstanding of what excellent customer service means. In addition, with a growing global market, language barriers and cultural differences can come into play.

All of these dynamics mean that it is essential to focus on cultural diversity, understanding and respect and that proper communication is the key ingredient to satisfied customers. Honesty and high business ethics also contribute to customer satisfaction and must be considered an element of good service. Businesses today have a higher chance of succeeding if they treat their customers with respect, deliver exactly what the customer ordered and do so in a timely manner and address any concerns or issues in an appropriate, respective and timely fashion.

Baltimore’s Trockenesis

Posted by Brody on September 26, 2009

Baltimore has many exciting attractions that will surely put a smile on every visitor’s face.  The city is rich with culture and shopping, and has a fascinating history.  Visiting here is to see some of the heart of the East coast, discovering one of the oldest seaports in the U.S.  Baltimore has a bit of everything, and something to offer everyone.  There is a rich, urban culture here with some splendid traditions and experiments in visual and performing arts.  With this appreciation for the finer touches in life, it is no surprise that in Baltimore, luxury hotels are also spectacular.  We’ve selected our hotels for their excellence in style and service.  You’ll fall asleep and wake up in absolutely splendor, our rooms decorated with a sophisticated elegance that will also make you feel elegant.  And after a bit of rest, and perhaps a gorgeous meal served by our world-class chefs, it’s a good time to see the wonderful city.

The Inner Harbor is one of the most popular spots here, with excellent shopping, food, sight-seeing, and history.  You might want to take a tour, or take in a museum or two, as you find your way around.  People watching is fantastic here, as it is in so many of the cities on the East Coast, where people from all walks of life go about their busy days.  It doesn’t take long, however, to see that Baltimore is a rather interesting place, with many cultures and subcultures co-existing, and it seems like something interesting is happening here.  Check out the local clubs, and if you happen to see a band named Trockenesis, you’ll know that something is going on.

Their form is experimental, electronic music.  They play acoustic instruments like bent saws and dry ice, a lot of percussion, and a bit of voice, too, to make a sound that is altogether otherworldly.  They’re produced by Baltimore’s Ehse Records, an outfit that produces and promotes new styles in music, using all the latest technologies, so that the producers are as edgy as the artists, or at least coming close.  The music may sound like a lot of noise, but after a few moments of close listening, and you realize that Trockenesis is made up of musicians who are really incredibly good.  Their skill and innovation reinvent themselves in every song, and sometimes in multiple moments within the songs, taking the listeners on a fantastic journey.  Hearing the recordings is very nice, but live is something else.

Social Networking

Posted by Brody on September 23, 2009

So much conversation on the internet, news and radio about the use of social networking by individuals, small business people, artist and large businesses today. Advertising and marketing models going from pushing information to you or at you to you pulling information toward you that you want. The changing face of this landscape is fascinating to observe as it moves ever faster and faster at a nearly explosive rate. Networking sites are introduced on a regular basis and over night they seem to be house hold names.

Well no it doesn’t really happen over night, but the time in the fringes, when the company is virtually unknown it seems like over night and your hearing about the site every where and everyone is talking about it and it is all over the media. One such site I can think of is the initally college student focused Facebook where the explosion of college students using the site for networking grew from hundreds, to thousands to tens of thousands of college students very very quickly. This popularity has continued to grow with celebrities, artists, buyers sellers and managers all taken up to establishing Facebook pages. This diversity has grown to encompass companies like Transglobal Property Management setting up fan pages to keep their clients informed. Many other social networking sites and blogging sites exist as well in the arena. One such site is for photo sharing Flickr showing pics from Transglobal Property Management pictures of vacations, family shots, artists paintings, jewelry that was hand created, pictures of company picnics, gorgeous professional work and so much more.

The saying a picture speaks a thousand words lives among sites such as these. It is an interesting world of on line communities where straight of social networking is building relationships across borders, getting first hand information and referrals for business and traveling decisions as opposed to relying on advertisements alone. The ability to reach a large audience with out gaining the approval of a gate keeper of the information. People are able to share their expertise and knowledge, thoughts and ideas freely instantly and across borders.

The Sydney Push

Posted by Brody on September 22, 2009

Traveling to Australia is always a pleasure, no matter which city.  Both friendly and fascinating, with landscapes that are extremely diverse and often completely stunning, it’s an amazing place.  But to travel in Sydney, the largest city, there is a lovely cosmopolitan sense combined with a charm that is so endearing it almost feels personal.  Planning a trip here has an excitement of its own, with daydreams about the cultural events, the fashion, the shopping, and the terrific accommodation.  Sydney, Australia has a gorgeous reputation for its hospitality, and the reputation is absolutely well-deserved.

It’s no wonder, because our hotels are located in one of the most interesting cities in the world.  This has always been the city where immigrants came, and it has a very strong mutli-cultural feel.  It’s visible in the works of art, and it’s very much present in the many kinds of cuisine served.  Sydney offers many splendid things for travelers of all ages, and culturally, it’s an adventure.  The visual arts, performing arts, and music scenes are very strong here, and it’s always been at the forefront of culture in this way.  Although most discussions of the revolutions in the world in the 1960s will point to origins of these movements from the Beat Generation, the Sydney Push deserves their place in this history as well.

Taking their name from street criminals in the previous century, the Sydney Push was composed mostly of university-educated artists and intellectuals, bored with the way things were, generally, in the 1950s.  Their solutions to the problems of the world were complex and fascinating, but generally formulated at the race track and the pub.  Richard Neville and Richard Sharp were some of the more prominent members, but the movement also attracted prominent and sharp feminist scholars such as Germaine Greer and Eva Cox.  It had a very vibrant lifespan, lasting for more than a decade, but gradually declining as the social structures began to shift, and there was less to argue with.  The movement, as such, ended a long time ago, but there are traces and legacies in the arts and culture here, born from an ancestry of loud and boisterous pub daydreams.

Hot Tubs, Spas and Alternative Medicines

Posted by Brody on September 21, 2009

Having your own spa makes life a little sweeter.  It’s suddenly possible to see how entertaining your friends, and relaxing in your own private retreat, can revolve around the same thing.  When you have your own spa, there’s always a delicious feeling throughout the day that when you’re home again, you’ll be melting the stress off your muscles in pure pleasure.  Or, you might decide to have a spontaneous dinner party with a refreshing dip in the spa at the end of the evening.  It’s a lovely combination.  There are also enormous health benefits from hot tubs, spas, and other water therapies.

Some of these benefits are directly related to the circulation.  Submerging the body in warm water can open the flow of blood through the veins, and is exquisite as well as beneficial to health.  According to Chinese medicine, foot baths alone are a wonderful way to improve the circulation in the body.  Having the feet in hot water for 5-10 minutes a day can have all sorts of benefits on the circulation system, alleviating the body’s extreme sensitivity to hot and cold weather, as well as having an extremely relaxing effect on the nerves.

There are, as you might imagine, many connections between relaxation before bedtime and increased ability to sleep.  There have been many scientific studies that link hot water before bed with better sleep, including deeper sleep cycles.  This is a therapy found in all sorts of alternative medicine traditions, and just another example of why something pleasurable is a good idea.  It’s also recommended to maintain the same bedtime rituals, so you can tell yourself it’s necessary to be in your hot tub every day. It’s for your health.  It might help you to have deeper sleep, have great benefits to the heart and circulatory system, and will certainly help to calm down a busy mind.  And it will give you years of wonderful memories.

In need of Property Management Assistance

Posted by Brody on September 17, 2009

With the changing face of the real estate market it is becoming increasingly harder and harder to keep up with the market values and the ups and downs. From region to region there is such a difference any more. Well there have always been differences from market to market, but it was usually about what was available, what was in demand and how fast or slowly the market prices on the property were going up. But now with some regions going down, some still looking for the bottom, others leveling off and some coming back it has become so difficult to make what use to be simple determinations.

I started thinking I need some help with all this, Transglobe property management was recommended to me by a colleague. Needing to do some research before deciding if I really need to engage a property management company, however it does sound like it would be a good idea on the surface. Catching the a look at the Facebook page the company appears to be professional and on the ball and up to date using social marketing. Giving over responsibility is not like me but I just don’t have the time and expertise to be making sound decisions in this market.

Transglobe property management has a Flickr page. I like seeing whom I will possible be dealing with, this also gives me the impression the company is forward thinking taking advantage of social networking tools to promote their business. Needing to know if they are comfortable with national markets or are they more regional.

Given the current real estate climate and the volatile nature of today’s market there really doesn’t seem to be much choice but lean on the knowledge of an expert. This will have to be a move I make sooner than latter.

STOMP at the New York Orpheum

Posted by Brody on September 15, 2009

STOMP is one of those musicals you seem to respond to with rhythmic foot taping and a heightened energy post show, though it often leaves audiences quickly forgetting the details and story, with the strongest lasting effect being a sort of primal impulse that may resurface in similar musical rhythmic situations. Critical acclaim may not have been the co-creators Luke Cresswell Steve McNicholas’ fundamental intention with the production, well of course, it may also have been their intention, and it certainly isn’t up to anyone to speak for them. However, it does seem like a more essential audience to performer connection is what is being sought. Audience members from out of town who see the show and are staying at one of the small hotels New York should just be careful not to pound the walls or floors too much when they return to their accommodations after the show.

Regardless of intent or critical reception of Stomp, it has certainly enjoyed a successful run at the Off Broadway venue Orpheum Theatre. It opened in late February of 1994 and is still going strong with its open run. In addition, it is highly original in its use of instruments and combination of percussion, comedy and movement. Some of the everyday items that are used for percussion instruments include brooms, plastic water bottles, shoes, trash cans, chairs and more. Almost anything is invited to get tapped or pounded on and become part of the show. In fact, the collection of percussion devices as increased during the run of the show. It has an extremely large ensemble cast, and most of them have extensive backgrounds in drums and percussion. Cresswell, one of the co-creators is a self trained percussionist and McNicholas is a dancer, actor and choreographer. Together they have created an engaging and invigorating theatrical production.

Know the Basics When it is Time to Buy New Tires

Posted by Brody on September 14, 2009

When one finds that it is time to replace their worn out tires with new ones, there are a couple key factors that will ensure that they are purchasing the right ones for their vehicle.  It is important to understand the basics of the tire in general.  This will help one in choosing not only the right tires for their car, but the right tires for the environment in which one lives as well as the right choice for the way in which one drives.  Driving habits can add wear and tear to tires without one even being aware of it.

So, a tire is compressed air surrounded by a flexible rubber container.  This simple device carries the weight of the vehicle and is one of the most important factors to ensure that a driver is able to stop on time, is to move forward, and to cushion the vehicle from and imperfections in the road.  The inner liner of a tire is important as it gives shape to the tire and it holds the air inside, a pretty important job.  The steel belts are then place on top of the liner.  The belts serve to ensure the stability of the tire and to keep the tire face flat, as with tread that is as flat as possible, more of the tire is in contact with the road.  This increases the traction and ensures a safer ride.

Then there is the tread.  Different treads offer different attributes.  Softer treads will absorb the bumps and the jars of the road, while treads that are more rigid provide the driver with better handling, especially when taking sharp turns and a better response to steering capabilities.  When it is time to buy new tires,  check the code on the side of the wall.  On the side of every tire, be it a motor cycle tire, truck tire or car tire, will have a code that will outline the carrying capacity of that tire.  The carrying capacity of a tire is extremely important, and one must be certain that the rating for that capacity is as high as the tires that are being replaced.  This knowledge will not only serve to ensure that one will succeed in purchasing the right tires for their cars, but that they will remain safe and secure on their journeys.

Due Diligence is Just Good Common Sense

Posted by Brody on September 14, 2009

If one ever has the intention of conducting business transactions of any kind, be it financial or in trade and commerce, the seemingly time consuming practice of due diligence is not only necessary, sometimes required by law, but is also just a form of practicing good common sense.  For those owning companies, it is advised that all of one’s employees receive proper training on how to follow the procedures of due diligence and the necessity for them to adhere to the policies with consistence.

This just means to know everything one can possibly know about those whom they are either about to do business with, or those with whom they are currently involved.  Due diligence is just another way of saying, complete investigation.  It is an investigation into the background of the clients or business associates with whom one’s name, or business name, will eventually be linked.  This involves going over financial documents of the potential customers of a financial institution, or the history of the previous business transactions that a company or an individual has conducted.  This is an attempt to discover all of the previous transactions, be they financial or legal, or in some cases, just the everyday activity of a business or a company, in order to ensure that those with whom one is about to become involved are honest and ethical.

How does one go about accomplishing the practice of due diligence?  Well, as the term implies, one must make certain that they themselves, and those whom they employ remain diligent about following the steps on a regular basis.  Looking through documents and contracts may seem to be a daunting task, but when considering the repercussions of becoming involved with those who are either committing acts that are illegal or unethical, the task becomes just common practice.  It is when a company takes a look at the big picture, that they can really understand the reasons why completing the small tasks becomes so important.

Learning from Small Engine Repair Manuals

Posted by Brody on September 14, 2009

The key to taking a long distance road trip, especially when traveling in an older vehicle is DIY auto repair.  This is just another way to say do it yourself, for when stuck out on a road in the middle of nowhere, the knowledge one will have gained from reading up on small engine repair manuals will come in very handy.  Small problems with an engine may seem very big when there is not a mechanic’s shop in sight, and could ruin an otherwise fabulous vacation.

It isn’t that one should learn everything, all at once, but the ability to know how to, and what to, inspect on one’s vehicle before heading out, will safe a lot of headaches down the road.  And just a little bit of knowledge about car maintenance will help.  Keep the manuals in a convenient location, say in the glove box, so that they are easy to find when trying to diagnose the issues that may come up on the back roads of Kentucky or in the middle of the Ozarks.

And when dealing with many issues of car engines on the road, often times these are minor repairs that one can accomplish on their own, just by following the suggestions in the vehicle’s manual.  Same holds true for motorcycle manuals. Many a journeyman, or woman traveling the open road via the motorcycle has studied up and will be able to fix their own bike should they need.  It’s putting to use the practical chapters of “Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance“.

And this knowledge does not only come in handy on long trips, but in day to day life and driving as well.  Independence is gained.  Independence from what? one may ask.  Independence from the worry, and independence from the dependence on car mechanics who may take advantage of those who are unsuspecting, and just want their car fixed.  With this knowledge one will be able to fix the small problems, and will know exactly what the big problems are.  This way, even when one can not fix those big problems, one will at least know what they are when they take their car or motorcycle in to someone who can.

Architectural Bangalore

Posted by Brody on September 9, 2009

We were finishing our morning coffee having gotten up early at one of the hotels Bangalore India cites for the tourist community when I realized we had wi-fi and I fired up my Touch. “Hey,” I said to Qi as she poured the last of the French press coffee into her cup. “Let’s check out this Vidhana Soudha. It’s the seat of the legislature, but more importantly it incorporates Dravidian style. Dravidian. What’s Dravidian style?” We were both architecture buffs but we were clueless about Dravidian style, and felt like it was something we ought to know about so we decided to go check it out. We finished off the rest of our surprisingly good croissants and jam and decided to enter the jam that is Bangalore’s traffic. Turns out Dravidian is the classic architectural style of these parts, Southern India, or so we gathered, and we did not even know it, and felt a little dumb for not realizing this. All the rock cut temples, the pyramidal shaped buildings that dot the cultural landscape (well, I shouldn’t say all, I am no expert, but I kind of know it when I see it, so to speak). We were not so keen to see legislative buildings in general, bet we were sufficiently interested to go see what this was about. We popped out side of the hotel into the warm air just a little after sunrise and already the streets were busy with traffic and people and a lively honking hum that one comes to associate with Indian city traffic. We hired a car and told the driver who seemed amused that we wanted to go their (maybe he thought we were going to address the legislature, but we certainly were not dressed for it).

Ohio Barns

Posted by Brody on September 9, 2009

I love driving around Ohio, Americas heartland marked by rolling hills hazy summer air and large farms. Ohio has a few big cities and many small towns, more tiny villages and even more farms. The interesting thing for me to see when traveling around Ohio is the different styles of barns there are there that have been buiit over time. Barns were the most important building on the farm and every bit of its existence was for practical purposes. Usually the most prominent building on the farm, larger and more important than the farmers house the barn had to hold live stock, feed, tack, buggies, plows, tools and equipment. These essential buildings were the most important landmark on the land scape in their day. Many barns are still in use some on working farms others are now storage for a family now occupying what was once a farm. None the less these beautiful structures remain marking the landscape telling of days gone by when the small family farm ruled the land. The style of a barn will tell of when it was made and general purpose of the barn. Styles changed from enormous buildings that housed virtually everything to specialized smaller structures and specialized structures like cow barns for dairy farms. Still there they are on a warm summer evening you can drive the back roads away from the Columbus luxury hotels and through the misty haze of the humid day enjoy the majesty of these buildings in pestled tones of the humid haze of a warm day, or the shadowy blues as shadows cross the land in the setting sun. The barns are ever present and comforting reminders of a simpler time. Ohio prides its self on these landmarks of the farm lands and has some preservation efforts in place. For the states 200Th birthday barns (http://www.ohiobarns.com/ohbarns/) that were prominently seen from the inter sate were specially painted in honor of the event marking the importance of the barn for tourism in Ohio today.

Theatre in Singapore

Posted by Brody on September 8, 2009

Singapore has many traditional performance companies as well as a progressive contemporary theatre and art scene. This incorporates into the dynamic quality of the city that attracts numerous tourists to its hotels and resorts every year. From traditional Cantonese Opera to the latest Broadway offering, Singaporean theatre is vibrant and popular. Many of the guests staying in a Singapore hotel resort will choose to experience both the historically relevant performances as well as a contemporary production, staged in English. This diverse spectrum offers something for everyone, whether you are a tourist, or a local citizen planning a night out.

The Singapore Repertory Theatre is one of the best examples of contemporary stage offerings found in the city. It was established in 1993 with the mission of providing the highest quality productions of history’s great plays. Critical reviews and audience responses testify to the success of the company. In addition, the theatre collaborates with individual performers, other companies and designers and directors from all over the world. This contributes to a vibrant and creative atmosphere in the theatre and by the company. In addition, the theatre hires some of the top artists in the field, which contributes to a sense of excellency and professionalism.

The theatre also stages original works by Singaporean and regional playwrights. It does not limit its exposure to these artists and playwrights, though they have been responsible for some of its greatest successes. Perhaps the most popular and definitely one of the highest critically recognized original works was the company’s production of Forbidden City: Portrait of an Empress. This show was originally produced in 2002 as part of the Esplanade, Theatre on the Bay’s opening festival. It is a musical that was developed by Stephen Clark, Steven Dexter and Dick Lee and tells the story of the legendary Chinese Empress Dowager Cixi. The original production was so popular that audience demand required a restaging of it in 2006. The company has seen many other successful productions including Barefoot in the Park and Rent.

Borobudur in Jakarta

Posted by Brody on September 8, 2009

Offering only the best for our guests, our Jakarta hotels are a generous blend of old and new world comforts. We have the best of old-world traditions like hospitality and luxurious style, and we also offer the best of the new, with technologies and creature comforts that speak to today. We like to insure that you are well-connected to the world at large, but won’t forget that you are in a splendid place, and escaping from the day-to-day routine can help to rejuvenate the body and mind. Jakarta is a great place to have a new adventure. It is a thriving and bustling metropolis, with urban adventures to be had at every turn. With the lush possibilities outside the door, we want to provide you with an accommodation experience that is calm and extremely pleasant, so that you can experience the same refreshing sense night after night.

Our hotels also offer incredible feasts, served by top chefs who are well-schooled in international cooking techniques. The local fare is quite tasty, combining traditional Indonesian with Chinese and Muslim influences for some extraordinary and extremely savory combinations. After a good night’s rest and a tasty meal, you’ll be ready to explore Jakarta. There are some splendid attractions here that speak of the immense diversity in contemporary Jakarta, and there is certainly something that will appeal to every member of the family. Visual art is extremely vibrant here, and also can teach something about a complicated history, as the recent Thousand Mysteries of Borobudur exhibition can attest.

The exhibition was put together to bring attention to the local UNESCO initiatives on culture and education, and uses Borobudur as a metaphor for local culture. Borobudur is a Buddhist temple built in Java in the 9th century, with thousands of relief panels and hundreds of statues contained in its structure. As such, it is a particularly apt metaphor for local visual culture, and the Thousand Mysteries of Borobudur exhibition is a testament to local culture. There was a competition for artists all over Indonesia, and the results of this, along with the curatorial staff’s magnificent collection of art works as well as videos, wee all on display here.

Best Recovery in Prague

Posted by Brody on September 3, 2009

I can speak directly to the value of patient activity in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU). It was around 1999, when I was in my 60′s and living in Prague. An Indian heart/lung surgeon from Albuquerque, New Mexico (I know, it’s confusing)performed open chest surgery on me in order to remove a tumor which two biopsies had failed to identify. Prior to my surgery, the doctor refused to explain to my what my procedure will be post-operation. He said he’ll explain it to me right before surgery. He would only say that it was so difficult that he had patients say on the morning of the surgery that they did not want to do it, so they ended up going back home. He said that telling me ahead of time would only cause me worry.

Anesthesia was timed perfectly. I was awake in the operating room and they required me to stand. Then I was moved through a couple of stages the required me to achieve specific activity goals until I regained my own room. The entire wing was run as an ICU. Instead of allowing me to sleep, I was awakened every hour on the hour on day 1 and I was required to stand. Next, I was made to walk the measured hallways, talking my IV stand along for the ride. My nurses acted like my own personal cheerleaders and they would make sure I was in no pain. They would even tap my tubes coming out of my back to avoid any pulling sensations. It was my job to walk several times each day with a daily goal leading to my ultimate goal. When I reached my 2 mile goal on the 8th day, I was dismissed. But, I had a stipulation that I would continue the routine at home. It was in the dead of winter, but with the help of my son, I reached my goal of 5 miles per day. I had what was considered one of the most rapid recoveries.

I’m now in my 80′s and I got a chance to ask my doctor why I was the only person walking the halls and he told me that there were two reasons: first, I had never smoked so my lungs were in perfect condition and two, I did not have any complicating illnesses. I advised him I made a reservation with one of the Prague Czech Republic hotels because I would like to personally thank him for not telling me before my surgery just how hard it was to recover.

Melbourne’s Anita Lane

Posted by Brody on September 3, 2009

There is little doubt that the five-star hotels in Melbourne are among the finest on the continent, nestled, as they are, in one of its most exciting cities.  Melbourne is a major cultural center in the world, with a fairly steady stream of activity in terms of music, theatre, dance, and visual arts for a few decades now.  Our hotels put you in the center of this magnificent place, so that you can enjoy the offerings of the city in first-class accommodations.  Our luxury hotels meet the highest standards in the industry, so that you can be sure to expect the best, with amazing cuisines prepared by top chefs trained in all the ins and outs of contemporary cooking, extremely modern exercise facilities to keep the body and mind balanced, and a host of extras that will keep you and every member of the family entertained and ready for your city adventures.
Melbourne’s cultural prominence has not dwindled at all in the past few years, and quite the opposite.  It is a place where some of the most daring and exciting new works of art can be seen and heard.  With a stunning list of festivals and special events that play here every week, there is never a shortage of things to do.   Even a short time here will reveal the rich history that the present moment draws from, and it would be difficult to check out the local music scene without hearing the name Anita Lane mentioned.  This Melbourne-born singer and songwriter has strong ties to some of her collaborators, equally famous as her.  Her latest creative output has been in collaboration with Mick Harvey, and she has also worked with Nick Cave.  Their history is also an interesting one.
She would meet them through her high school classmate Rowland S. Howard, and become some of the biggest names in the Melbourne post-punk movement in the late 70s-early 80s.  Anita Lane influence on this movement can’t be overestimated.  Likewise, it’s not an exaggeration to say that these years were formative in the history of rock music in the world.  She wrote a few of the songs for the Birthday Party, when they were still based in Melbourne and before moving to Berlin.  This was and still is some of the darkest and most entertaining gothic punk music (without it being gothic punk) around.  Later, she would become Nick Cave’s muse when he was at work with the Bad Seeds, and that’s certainly history.

Two Tones in New York

Posted by Brody on September 2, 2009

I came to New York to participate in a weekend workshop that will teach me about Binaural tones or beats. Luckily, I managed to book a room at a New York cheap hotel that was not far from where the workshop was being held. I learned so much that I’ll be able to now offer my clients another healing and meditative alternative.

I learned that Binaual’s is an auditory process which perceptions arise in the brain independent of the physical stimuli. The brain which produces a phenomenon that results in a low-frequency pulsations in the loudness of a perceived sound when two tones at a slightly different frequency are played separately, one to each ear, using stereo headphones. I got to experience this first hand, and I must say, after just one session, I could tell a difference with how I felt and looked at my surroundings. A beating tone will be perceived by a person, as if the tow tones mixed naturally, out of the brain. The difference between the two tones and frequencies must be small, about 30 Hz for the effect to occur. If the two tones are heard separately, then no beat will be perceived.

The effect creates a brainwave synchronization or what’s known as the brainwave entrainment. It’s a practice that aims to cause brainwave frequency to fall in step with the periodic stimulus which has a frequency corresponding to the intended brain state, for example, to induce sleep. It depends upon a frequency following a response, a naturally occurring phenomenon where the human brain has a tendency to change its dominant EEG frequency towards the frequency of a dominant external stimulus. This stimulus will be aural and visual.

I was so amazed with the results that I ordered most of their CD’s that were created with he Atmosphere Dream Synch mode. The Atmosphere composition has been used in television like ‘Lost’ and in movies, like the ‘Bourn Ultimatum’ and ‘Transformers’. All my clients will now benefit from this form of meditation.

Lynn Lu, Singapore Installation Artist

Posted by Brody on September 2, 2009

When you have arrangements for a boutique hotel in Singapore, then you know an adventure awaits you.  Singapore is unique in the world, one of the only sovereign city-states on the planet, with a sense of style and culture that is entirely unique, and extremely connected to global vibrations.  Our hotels are exquisitely detailed to offer an ambience that is relaxing and invigorating.  With fantastic meals prepared by chefs schooled in contemporary techniques and classical tastes, and a host of other sumptuous extras, you are sure to find a sense of well-being rarely experienced, and the magic of Singapore will await you.

In Singapore, there is an enormous array of attractions and distractions to entertain every member of the family.  From people watching to sight-seeing to tours, there are many fantastic ways to get to know the place.  Even a cursory glance will reveal a bustling metropolis, where the locals are extremely hip on the latest trends, and there is an artistic sensibility running through everything.  The visual arts are extremely important here, and Singapore has seen a boom in the past few decades.  Singapore has a culture that supports excellence in artistic innovation, and some of the most interesting artists today come from here.  Lynn Lu is an excellent example.

Born in 1974, she has a BFA from Carnegie Mellon in Pittsburgh, an MFA from the San Fransisco Art Institute, and is currently working on her doctoral thesis from the University of Newcastle in Australia.  Her work is based in performance and installation, and her projects are extremely thought-provoking, and visually quite stunning.  There is a sense of melancholy about her work, mixed with equal doses of humor and despair.  There are also sharp cultural critiques at work here, and the sharpness of thought requires viewing the work first-hand.  She has shown work at the Future of Imagination international performance art event, among many other venues all around the world.

Hong Kong Arts Festival

Of all the attractions offered by the magical Hong Kong, restaurants are a particularly central specialty.  Hong Kong, with its enormous mix of cultures and traditions, has a connection to all the major culinary styles in the world.  Cuisine here is often a sumptuous blend of flavors and cooking techniques, providing meals that range from the comfortably familiar to the seductively exotic.  Our restaurants are carefully selected to offer you the best of local fare, and the newest international delights.  We cater to the population of the place, which is very cosmopolitan and very selective, so that you are guaranteed a dining experience that meets the highest standards and the most discerning palate.

Hong Kong is a magnet for some of the best and most interesting minds in the world, and has something to offer professionals from all walks of life.  Visitors here will be pleased by the exciting pace and vibrant activities.  There is certainly something here to keep every member of the family charmed and enchanted.  After a wonderful meal in one of our luxurious restaurants, taking in some of the local cultural offerings seems like the order of the day.  For those travelers lucky enough to be here during a particularly exciting month, the Hong Kong Arts Festival is a dazzling selection of excellent entertainment.  Begun in 1972 by a group of individuals with similar sensibilities, the Hong Kong Arts Festival has evolved into a major cultural event.

There is a stunning array of artists that gather here, performing works of live music, dance, theatre, and opera.  Performances are not limited to Hong Kong-based organizations, as some of the world’s most renowned companies have presented at the Hong Kong Arts Festival, from the Mark Morris Dance Company to the Bolshoi Theatre.  There is also a special arm of the festival dedicated to developing appreciation for the performing arts in young people, the Young Friends of the Hong Kong Arts Festival.  Here, not only attendance is encouraged, but also participation, helping to train the next generation of performing artists of world-class quality.

Day in Sydney

Posted by Brody on September 2, 2009

Alicia told me she was a little nervous about heights, actually really nervous, just as we had paid for parking and for the Sydney Bridge Climb where they took us into a room and had us sign our life away. This made her even more nervous, but coming here was her idea so I asked what was up. She said she was trying to overcome fears, and said she was inspired by my snorkeling. I am a bit nervous around water, but I gamely went snorkeling in Sydney Bay, little panicky at first, but I actually began to enjoy towards the end, now I can’t wait to go again. By now we were asked to remove our cell phone and camera so you had nothing with you as you climbed up, which took a while and tension built up as you prepped for the walk, including putting on a suit. We had woken up really early to see the sun come up over the Sydney skyline, which was grand, and we had a big breakfast of waffles and ice cream (why not) and a big pot of coffee, at a hotel Sydney Australia is known for, and spent the morning window shopping in Paddington. I skipped my afternoon lunch beer in anticipation of the climb, and glad I did as it was quite a walk up, attached to a zip cord for the walk with a ball bearing clip and we trudged up. It was a little drizzly and cool, which was great because we say Sydney in a soft weather light and the sight was wonderful. We so much like this city and felt like we paid homage to the nice time we had spent here at the museums and parks and restaurants and shop that climbing up here was a fun thing to do. Even Alicia got into it, as she lost her initial nerves and by the trip down was bounding like a kangaroo.

The Regulations of the FCPA

Posted by Brody on September 2, 2009

The United States Congress was part of a group that included thirty three countries from around the world, that came together in 1988 to put an end to corruption. Government officials from across the globe coordinated and collaborated to create a system that would end bribery, money laundering and terrorist funding that was taking place in the financial systems at the time. Those that were initially targeted were the officials and the military, and their attempts to exploit foreign companies and officials through extortion. When this occurs in a country it has the potential to bring the country down. It wreaks havoc on the society, often throwing the economic systems into a tailspin. For once officials or a country is considered corrupt, others will take away their investments and refuse to do any business with them. The people of the society will lose their jobs, and be thrown into abject poverty, while those conducting the corrupt activities remain in power and wealthy to boot.

This is the exact definition of corruption, when the actions one takes for personal gain come at the expense of others. What was created at that conference more than twenty years ago was the Foreign Corrupt Practice Act, or the FCPA. This Act affects the international financial institutions greatly in they way that their business and their transactions are conducted. They are required by law to comply to a strict set of policies and procedures with regards to their dealings with other institutions and foreign officials. They must conduct their own thorough investigations of whom the chose to interact with by following the concept of “know your customer”, and in doing so must report any and all suspicious activities or acts of criminal intent to the proper agencies that will conduct their own investigations into the matter. Failure to do so will result in their own possible convictions. This is just one of the ways in which the countries of the world are coming together to put an end to terrorism and corruption.

Corruption in the Indonesian Military

Posted by Brody on September 2, 2009

For many weeks, protests have been staged by the students and the liberal members of society in Indonesia.  These protests, as in the current ones in Tanzania, have to do with corruption in the military and the government.  The upper echelon of the military is under attack, not only from the citizens of the country but by the international press.  The media has published many articles that illustrate just how corrupt those high ranking officers really are.

Companies in other countries have made reports about the fact that they were required to pay off officials in exchange for the business opportunities they had received.  Just as the government and the financial institutions are discovering, many foreign businesses are refusing now to do business in Indonesia, for not only do they not want to be forced to bribe the officials, they do not want to be associated with people, with businesses and with a country is so entrenched in these corrupt acts.

For there is not only the aspect of the corruption itself, but the actions of the military and the government is affecting the economy and quality of the lives of the people of the country, and not in a good way.  This is what is so characteristic of the criminal acts of money laundering, terrorist financing and bribery.  The leaders may or may not face consequences, depending on whether or not they get caught, but the citizens of a country where corruption is running rampant always suffer.

The investors on the foreign markets did approach the president of Indonesia, Suharto, with their concerns as he is surrounded by the corruption, he himself is known to be an extreme honest person.  He agreed with the concerns of the investors, as well as the people of his country and has pledge to participate in the all-out attack on the illegal, and immoral acts of those involved.

Know Your Customer When Dealing with Tanzania

Posted by Brody on September 1, 2009

The world media has had their eye on Tanzania for a long time.  Due to their coverage of the current situation, wide spread corruption, people are discovering what has really been going on there, and they are starting to protest.  The government has split and the country seems to be in quite an uproar.  The current money laundering cases have made clear the need for the concept of “know your customer

And banks throughout the world are following that procedure right now.  Now that the corruption cases have exposed, involving so many of the banks and the politicians, the banks and politicians of countries around the globe are refusing to be connected to those in Tanzania.  Knowing your customer just refers to the procedures one follows when they investigate the history and the character of those they are about to do business with.  It has been a widely practiced concept since the attack on September 11 in an attempt to discover the financial institutions involved in not only money laundering, but in the funding of terrorism as well.

This is a two-fold attack on corruption.  The first aspect is that the banks are checking the background on all their customers, and looking for suspicious activity.  Examples of acts that are suspicious are when large cash deposits are made, or when a customer makes numerous transfers in a short amount of time.  The second aspect is that the financial institutions of a particular country, really depend on the international partnerships with the institutions of other countries.  This means that no bank wants to be associated with another that has been found corrupt, and sometimes that is the motivating factor to not participating in corrupt acts.  In any case, the banks and the government of Tanzania will soon be called upon to explain themselves, after years of getting away with these criminal activities.

Best Motorcycle Tires

Posted by Brody on September 1, 2009

Both the tires of a motorcycle and the engine, are responsible for the best possible operation and handling of a bike,  as well as for the safety.  Some people wonder which is most important to them, but to be honest, both are.  The ride of the bike is determined by the engine and quality performance tires such as those produced by the Toyo Tire Corporation.  In general, tire size should always be the proper size for the make of the bike. The tire bias, the style of the tread as well as the materials used in production should one consider all the aspects for the making of the optimal performance and the life of the tire as well as the safety of the driver.

As opposed to the tire of a car, which should all be the same size and style, the front and rear ends of a motorbike have different functions, so often times the tires are different from front to back.  The rate of acceleration and the power of the bike is under the control of the rear wheel while the front wheel takes most charge of a bikes capacity to effectively brake.   Some bikes have close to an eighty percent difference between the capacity of the two tires.

Another difference between the front and the rear wheels is that the back tire needs to be designed to withstand the lean and tilt of the bike, while the front tire is of course, more affected by turns.  And while all four tires of a car bear the weight of the vehicle, it is the back tire of a motorcycle that carries most of that weight.  All of these aspects must be considered when one is deciding on and purchasing the tires for their bike.  There are various forms of tires, from racing Cooper tire, to sport tires, and touring tires to cruisers.  It just depends on the make and model of the bike, as well as the intention of the driver, as to which is the best for ultimatum performance.
