Goa’s DJ Ryan

Posted by Brody on October 29, 2009

Goa has a reputation for being a fantastic spot for global parties on gloriously beautiful beaches.  It also has a reputation for being a spot to look at nature, in a rich zone of great biodiversity, that has to be protected because it is one of the most amazing spots on the planet.  It also has a reputation for a rich local culture that has fascinating visual and performing arts in a lively urban atmosphere.  All these things are true, and they still don’t represent what Goa is.  This is to say that Goa is many things to many people, and has many personas that are still under evolution, and may never completely reveal themselves.  It’s a fantastic place to visit, however, and it has some of the world’s best hotels.  Goa is an amazing place that’s got something to offer everyone.

Sunsets, beaches, and temples are a heady combination, and that’s one of the best parts of Goa. When it delivers, it delivers great quantities and in unusual combinations.  There is almost an overwhelming sense that comes when you’re visiting the temples right after a nice sunsoak on the beach, where too many worlds are coming together at once, and that’s a typical feeling, and it’s very interesting when it happens, because it suggests that the traveler is suddenly becoming a citizen of the world.  At this point, it is wise to go with the flow, and find a club where they’re playing some fantastic music to let your mind sort out the contradictions, and your body to take over.

Fortunately, in Goa this is very easy to do, as there are lots of excellent dance clubs.  Keep an eye out for one of the hottest djs in town, DJ Ryan, whose been playing with 8 years of experience under his belt, and lately has been spinning some of the hottest nights in town.  His taste for hiphop and retro come through at the exactly right moments, moving the crowd to new rhythms.  Ryan Beck as he is also known, plays a lot in town, but has also had some international work, too, and recently was in Moscow.  Music crosses borders in a way that few art forms can.

Haven’t Been to Knoxville Since the Worlds Fair

Posted by Brody on October 28, 2009

I have not been to Knoxville, TN since the 1982 Worlds Fair. My parents took the family there and we had a great time. It was the most fun we had as a family group in years that summer. The fair as I remember it was huge and full of wonderful exhibits and exhibitions. We were there for several days as I recall and ate tons of foods from all over the world and saw exhibits of Japanese textiles. African art and so many ore things I can not remember them all. It was all so over whelming as I recall taking in all the sites and information.

Now I have to go to Knoxville on business more than twenty years latter. I really never thought I  would be through Knoxville again especially now we are living in Colorado. The rooms that were booked for me at hotels Knoxville is near the park where the world’s fair was held. i am thinking I will take some time and wander through the park and see if it brings back any memories. It will be interesting to see what was left from the fair and how it has been incorporated into a park.

I know that in 2002 there was an exhibit in Knoxville commemorating the twenty year anniversary of the fair. So I wonder how much stuff is left around from the fair.

I will be there for a little over a week giving some training on a new computer program we are rolling out company wide. I was surprised I was selected to be the one going to do the training but I suppose it does make sense since the work donein Knoxville will have more of an impact on my department than any other. Well now I have to think about packing and getting someone to watch the house and animals while I am out of town.

Jan and Brice had been wanting to install a hot tub in their backyard for almost six years. They had agreed on the exact model and additional features they wanted and had even contacted a few companies to discuss pricing. However, they had also talked about moving and finally decided they would like to move to a larger house with a bigger yard and would hold off on the purchase until they were settled in their new home.

Well, as with many of the other best-laid plans of Brice and Jan, this didn’t work out as smoothly or as quickly as they both would have liked. They housing market took a drastic turn almost immediately after they made their decision to sell and they were stuck in their home for three years before they thought they could put it on the market and get a fair price for it. When this finally happened they contacted their real estate professional and listed their house. They also began looking for their own dream home. It was another year and half before the entire transition was complete, but finally, there they were sitting on a rug in their new living room, there was no other furniture at that point so they had take out Chinese food on their new rug. They ate with chop sticks and toasted their future with rice wine while they made plans for what all they were going to do with the new house.

Shortly after moving in Brice was anxious to get to work on the backyard. He contacted choosehottubsdirect.com and discovered a whole new line of hot tub models and a greater number of optional features. Brice and Jan discussed the landscape plans for their new yard, which would definitely include a deck and a flower garden with lilac bushes and finally decided on the perfect hot tub for their interests. The purchase and installation of their new hot tub was the easiest part of designing their yard. The rest of their plans took three months to get finished. But at last, Brice and Jan had an incredible backyard for their

Grunge vs. Folk: Seattle Spotlight

Posted by Brody on October 26, 2009

Seattle’s grunge scene was a formative period for many different youth cultures all over the world.  It influenced generations by highlighting that generation’s particular brand of angst and frustration.  It also brought out the creativity of a generation, and lead to an explosion of new kinds of music, the likes of which we still have not seen, because they’re still being born.  Seattle is a very creative place.  It’s a great town to get work done, because the rain makes it seem like every day is a good day to nestle in and get cozy with a laptop.  It’s also a great town to visit, because the rain is really rarely very heavy, and there’s a lot going on, in every direction.  Set strategically in some of the city’s hottest areas, our Seattle luxury hotels place you where you want to be, for business and pleasure

They’re very exquisite, so that should you decide to take a rainy day in, the glorious amenities will keep you busy and pampered, or gorgeously cozy.  But there are amazing things to see all around you, and you never know when you might run into another cultural revolution right outside your door.  Grunge might be gone, but the energy and talent of the next generation is palpable, and this city is really quite electric.  Or maybe, better to say acoustic.  It is the Northwest, after all, and there’s a strong folk tradition and sensibility here.  To contrast against grunge, there’s the Northwest Folklife Festival.

This festival has been running here for almost 40 years now, and started as a forum for local and Northwest musicians to present their work to the people of Seattle free of charge.  It was a celebration of the local sound, and emphasized the cultural heritage of the communities here.  It’s still that way today, although much larger.  Now it’s at the Seattle Center and there’s a suggested donation.  But it’s kept its spirit of free music for the people of Seattle, only now there is also dance and visual art, and a number of the local businesses participate, offering workshops and activities for kids and adults.  Folk and grunge aren’t all that far apart, really, and it’s possible, and sometimes even likely, to meet locals who have one foot in each world simultaneously.

Avonmore milking sales management

Posted by Brody on October 26, 2009

Branding and marketing have proved to be a great part of the success that Avonmore Super Milk has experienced lately in Ireland.  Within just this year, it has seen an increase of about fifteen percent from sales.  Researchers in the industry claimed that about sixty thousand people had actually made the switch to the brand as well.

Part of the reason for its success comes how the company has employed sales management.  Training and experience on his side, Simon Greene, not the famous science fiction author, constructed the campaign that has led to the current success the company has been enjoying lately in the news.  He named it the power of sunshine, owing to the fact that a large amount of people in Ireland actually suffer from a rather significant problem: many of them lack proper amounts of vitamin D.  Some of the effects of lacking enough vitamin D are increased chances of heart disease, diabetes, rickets, cancer, and even schizophrenia, though there is usually some sort of genetic predisposition to the last disease for the deficiency of vitamin D to have that kind of an effect.

There have been large changes in the way the company advertises their goods and in the goods themselves.  The milk now contains a little bit more than the normal calcium and vitamins normally found in milk.  However, it has been put in to address the problems specific to Ireland, and not as a kind of Frankenfood experiment.  In addition to the funny advertisement campaign, the company is also planning on keeping its sponsorship from Munster Rugby Schools Cup.  Further sponsorship will be found on TV as Avonmore will be a patron of the weather on TV.  Charity has also been a big part of what the company does and will continue to be.  There will be a picnic this year that is expected to bring in even more money for the charitable efforts of Avonmore corporate.  Team building and community building games and funs will naturally be a part of the event.

Cleaning Your Car Battery Yourself

Posted by Brody on October 22, 2009

I found out the hard away that it is necessary to ensure that your car battery, and the cables remain clean of corrosion.  After spending all night waiting tables, I came out late, and tried to start my truck.  Nothing.  Now, I know very little about DIY auto repair, that is short for “do it yourself”, and when it comes to cars I fill own tank, and check my own oil.  That’s about the extent of my “DIY” capabilities.  But I popped the hood anyway, thinking I might be able to magically figure out what was wrong.  Nope.

Within a few moments, one of the restaurant patrons that was dining on the patio, had jumped the fence in his nice suit and headed over to take a look at my truck.  As it turned out, he was once a mechanic and still enjoyed working on cars.  He pulled his truck up, and got out his tool box.  He knew his way around a small engine, repair manuals for this guy were not needed.  With a flash light he discovered the problem at once.  I had been driving around with my battery and my cables covered with corrosion.

It was easy to see once he showed me, corrosion is a white layer of crust that builds up around the posts of the battery and when enough of it is present you will not be able to start your car, truck or motor cycle.  Manuals are something I would soon be investing in.  It does not take much to make certain that your battery, the cables and the posts remain clean.  There are cleaning solutions, and together with the solution the only tool necessary is a metal brush, much like a toothbrush, but much tougher.  The man cleaned my car battery and then jumped my car for me.  He did this all on a 118 degree Phoenix summer night, in a nice suit.  I made it home that night, with my truck, and I have never forgotten the kindness of that stranger, nor have I ever neglected taking a look at my battery from time to time.

Pretty in Pink in Jaipur

Posted by Brody on October 21, 2009

I recovered from a few days fraught with random unexpected issues while in Delhi. This in turn made me hook myself up with a car and driver. I told him to take me to explore the Pink City! Jaipur is called this because most of the prominent buildings and structures are washed in pink. Personally, I think it looks more orange than pink. Actually, the city kind of reminds me of the Marrakech’s kasbah, which is an orange walled city where all the buildings are the same colour. These two places have many similarities, like the prehistoric nature of lighting a fire under a car so the mechanics can see and fix a broken axle, or plenty of cats and dogs nursing their own sores roadside, or the horse and cart losing the battle with motorbikes and scooters.

I liked Jaipur so much, I decided to book a room at one of the luxury hotels Jaipur has and stay one night. After seeing the beautiful textiles that are made right here and available to purchase are truly stunning. It reminded me of my friend Samantha, who loves India and is an aficionado of India’s history. I can’t tell you why Jaipur reminded me of her, it just does. My driver was sad to see me go, he was hoping to take me back to Delhi, but for the moment, Jaipur has captured my heart. It’s really nice here, the people seem to be happy all the time, especially if I compare it to Delhi. I know a little Hindi, and I say Hello and Thank you really well. This has helped me tremendously everywhere I’ve been.

Tomorrow, I’ll head out to Agra, it’s the home of the Taj Mahal. I hope to have photo’s uploaded there. My Panasonic stopped working in Delhi, so I had to buy a new one, I haven’t read the instructions yet, but it doesn’t look too complicated. Plus, it’s a better camera for less the price of my old one!

Art Alive Gallery in Delhi

Posted by Brody on October 20, 2009

A remarkable blend of the ancient and the modern, New Delhi is a fascinating place to travel, and is one of the most coveted destinations in the world.  An economic center, it is also an extremely vibrant cultural scene, with performing and visual arts traditions that are some of the finest in the world.  The urban center is always buzzing with the fantastic and baffling activity of human beings from all walks of life.  People watching is amazing here, and it’s one of the best places on earth to lose an afternoon watching the crowds.  There is positively something special here to entertain and enrich visitors of all ages, offering an adventure for everyone in New Delhi.  Four star hotels are an excellent lodging option, offering a combination of splendor and convenience that is very difficult to beat.

Our hotels put you in the center of things, so that you’ll have easy access to fine events and excellent night life, and the lodging is enormously hospitable, providing you with comfort and style.  Our hotels have an excellent sense of style, merging the old with the new, so that the vistas inside the walls of the hotel are splendid and wonderful like the rest of New Delhi.  If you’re looking for a quick way in to understanding a bit about the local culture, try entering through its art. Delhi galleries have an amazing variety of work that reflects a thousand versions of the city.  There are places that specialize in local and international artists, and just stumbling upon spaces is always fascinating.  Some of the galleries will sell reproductions and mass-produced versions of world art, but the hipper-looking ones are more likely to offer works by new artists.

If you’re looking for a place that has a bit of edge, but still has a wide mainstream appeal, attracting locals and internationals, and a number of celebrities, stop by Art Alive Gallery.  It’s been around for almost two decades already, and is one of the best places to see examples of contemporary work that speak to a large segment of Delhi’s art world.  There are a number of events at Art Alive outside of the usual exhibition calendar, and ones that make a lot of important social calendars in town.  There’s always something happening, however, so check the local listings for what’s on when you’re in town, and start looking into the world that’s opening up right here.

Monk seal a solitary Hawaiian Creature

Posted by Brody on October 14, 2009

Hawaii is known for its wide variety of species, from the plants to the animals.  In fact, it has about ten thousand animals and plants together that do not live anywhere else in the world.  With Oahu vacation packages, you will most likely see the playful monk seal.  It got the name because it tends to be a solitary animal.  The other attribute that makes the monk seal a “holy” kind of animal is the way in which the skin about its neck look.  It hangs in a way that might suggest the lowered hood of a monk’s robe.  Its actual Hawaiian name is ilio-holo-i-ka-uaua.  In a rough translation of the text, it means a dog that can navigate the difficult ocean.

Because they are also one of the “over the hill” breeds of the pinniped classification system, they are often called by scientists a kind of fossil.  They have not changed or evolved much in the last fifteen million years.  Despite this long history, its species is in danger of extinction.  Currently, only fifteen thousand and twelve thousand seals still exist in the islands today.  Other places it once existed was in the Mediterranean, but there it is believed to be gone for good.  Though you cannot see them in Maui, vacation packages to Hawaii often come with tours that over all the islands, so you can a have a chance to see this peaceful creatures whatever island you pick.

You can also see these great animals with in  Lanai hotels.  Such deals there are a fantastic way to see it and other animals.  For instance, the color fishes, octopuses, and eels that it feeds on for sustenance.   It is in the sea for much of its life.  As a result, it kind look like green due the algae that grows in its fur from so much exposure to the water.   Other water trivia associated with this animal revolves around its ability to go sis hundred feet under water for a good meal.  It can do without any kind of harm.  It can actually slows is heart beat down to about fifteen beats in a minute.  In surface swims, the monk seal has a beat of up 120.  It is called bradycardia.  Perhaps this is another reason for why the seal is called a monk.  Its lowered heart beat is similar to the advantages meditation can give you, the kind of meditation monks often do.

The History of Blinds

Posted by Brody on October 12, 2009

Blinds may seem like a relatively new invention, with companies such as Next Day Blinds offering a variety of horizontal and vertical blinds, shades and shutters from a variety of wood, metal, and vinyl materials. However, Next Day Blinds and other similar companies are only expanding on a very ancient practice

Blinds come from the concept of blinding someone from seeing into a room or a given area.  The ancient Egyptians were among the first to develop blinds both for privacy and temperature control. They gathered reeds from the Nile River, strung them together and hung them over the window.  To try and cool the room down, they would have servants poor water over them, cooling the air as it came through the window.  The Chinese practiced a similar method with bamboo.  In fact, bamboo blinds can still be seen throughout Asia today.  Desert dwellers had a slightly different approach to covering their windows.  They would take wet clothes and hang them over the windows.

Even some of our more modern designs have their roots in ancient history.  During the 16thVenetians discovered the concept of the blind in Persia and then sold them to France.  Though the styles have changed over the last several hundred years, the concept of the Venetian blind is still the same.  During the 1950’s Venetian blinds were made using metal slates and strips of fabric to move them up and down; however, the 1980’s saw them change to vinyl, which was much quieter and aesthetically pleasing.   century

Even though are desires are the same—privacy and comfort—the styles have certainly changed.  Today, blinds and window treatments can be purchased in just about any style, color and design you could want.  They not only provide for our basic needs but for our more frivolous desires as well.

Finding New Friends In Mumbai

Posted by Brody on October 8, 2009

Driving through Mumbai, we noticed, even this early in the morning that this city is rich in culture. There were plenty of fashion conscious people all about the streets, maybe it’s because Mumbai is the home of Bollywood and it is the most expensive cities in India. We noticed that the streets weren’t filled with rickshaws, but those old style taxi cabs, one that actually use a meter.

We arrived at one of the luxury Mumbai hotels , which looked intriguing from the outside. We were sharing a taxi with another couple and they decided that our hotel looked good also, so they got out of the taxi with us and were able to book a room, but they had to wait till 10am to get into their room (the hotel was that booked), because someone needed to check out. We let this couple put their bags in our room until theirs is ready, and we all went off to find breakfast. It’s truly amazing how easy it is to make friends when travelling.

We were all very tired from our journey to get to Mumbai, but we were also very hungry. The heat and the humidity begged us to go back to our air-conditioned hotel room, but hungry won out.  After breakfast, we returned to our hotel and our new found friends room was available, they retrieved their bags and we big farewell, then we crashed, we were so unbelievably tired. We fell asleep to the nice clean, cool and comfortable beds.

We awoke to our new found friends knocking on our door, they didn’t go to sleep like we did, they managed to find time to shop and find us a thank-you gift for us being so kind to them. The gift was a small Deity porcelain statue of Ghanesha. What a pleasant surprise and how nice of them, so of course we all went out to lunch together!

First Trip to Bangkok

Posted by Brody on October 6, 2009

I made my first trip to Bangkok after years of being very curious about this intriguing city. Everyone of my friends, who have been to Bangkok, always say that the pollution from the traffic and all the traffic jams and the city not being clean, should make me not want to visit Bangkok. Well, all my friends advise and warnings didn’t detour me and I’m here to report that I love Bangkok with all its traffic jams and pollution. This place is alive and there’s so much to do here, staying a week isn’t long enough. I really need to stay a month or so, but unfortunately, I can’t afford to do that.

The reason I found Bangkok to be exciting and interesting is, for one thing, all the old buildings and the scenery. For another thing, all the new buildings and the modernity. I found Bangkok to be a wonderful blend of old and new.

My arrival here was after spending a few days in Singapore. I booked airplane tickets and made reservations at one of the five star hotels Bangkok has while I was in Singapore. I took Air Asia, a budget airline, but it turned out to be a good choice, the seats were comfortable and the little snack I had was tasty. Once I arrived, I made new friends. This was because at the airport, I has to take the airport bus, which everyone squeezes in, I was jammed right up against these two people, the ones I’m now really good friends with; it’s amazing how being right in someones face that you’re forced to become friendly, otherwise it can become quite awkward. By the time the bus dropped us off at the Singapore bus Terminal, we were laughing and sharing all of our travel experiences. I’ll be seeing them tonight at a club they invited me to.

So, to all my friends back home, the ones who tried to keep me away from experiencing Bangkok for myself…I now have new friends who love Bangkok just as much as me.

Prague Castle Subject of Humanity Paper

Posted by Brody on October 5, 2009

Steven had a major essay coming up in his humanities class that was supposed to be a combination of personal perspective combined with history. He wasn’t the most ambitious student in the class, though he typically did well and maintained a B average. His favorite subject was music, though he always excelled in humanities. Writing had never been a problem for him and when he first learned of the assignment at the beginning of the semester he didn’t think twice about completing it on time. However, as the deadline drew near, Steven became increasingly anxious about what he write. For some reason, on this particular assignment he always drew a blank. That is, until this evening at dinner when his older sister mentioned a story from their summer vacation last year.

In June of last year Steven and his family visited Prague and had an amazing experience while they stayed in one of the finest Prague Czech Republic hotels. It was an incredible vacation, and while Laurie told her story, Steven realized he had the perfect subject for his important paper. Their mother had a particular problem with directional orientation and never knew which way was north, south, east or west. The family had visited the Prague Castle, and being one of the largest castles in the world, it was certainly no place for a directionally challenged person to get lost.

While Laurie went on with the funny family story, Steven became more interested in the details and history of the castle. The castle is the home of the Czech Crown Jewels and had a prominent role in Czech political history. Steven decided that the jewels were the most intriguing aspect of the castle to him, and he decided he would base his paper on this element and combine it with his background in gemstones. At last, he finally knew what he was going to write about, and was so excited to get started he decided to skip dessert, which was his favorite, homemade apple pie. Instead he went straight to his room, sat down at his computer and began writing. Knowing her son was the responsible student he was, Steven’s mother brought a piece of pie to him and he enjoyed it at the computer.

Vitamin D: From the Sun

Posted by Brody on October 1, 2009

When one lives in the Southwest desert, one is concerned with effects of the sun, too much causes cancer.  At first sun screen was a good thing, then it became a bad thing. At first having a healthy, deep tan was a good thing, then it too became a bad thing.  It seems as with everything else, that which is taken or given in moderation, seem to be the best option.  Too much causes ill effects, just as too little does the same.  Now it has been noted, that sunshine will make you live a healthier and a longer life.

For many people, the benefits of sitting in a hot tub in the beautiful shine of the sun, such as those found at choosehottubsdirect.com, outweigh the risk of skin cancer.  Sun makes the human body produce vitamin D.  Vitamin D protects the body from a plethora of diseases, but the fear of one disease–skin cancer–creates fear and keeps people in the shade, in the dark so to speak.  The medical community states that, yes, the danger of skin cancer is real, but that the fear is depriving people from the benefits of just simply sitting in the sun for a bit.

A study carried out in Oslo, by Johan Moan of the Institute for Cancer Research, led to the conclusion that just a modest amount of exposure to the sun light, provides the body with the ability to produce a substantial amount of Vitamin D.  In fact, this production of the vitamin actually aids the body in fighting many other forms of cancer.  As well as diabetes, rickets, and osteoporosis, as calcium and Vitamin D work together, they need each other to allow the body’s absorption of both.

Peoples’ body’s in sunny climates, such as Phoenix, AZ produce over three times the amount of Vitamin D as those who live in the United Kingdom.  Vitamin D helps the immune system of the body function at a higher level.  And will in fact benefit those suffering from other forms of cancer and disease.  So go to the hot tub, toss away the sun screen and find health from the sun.  It’s fun, it’s relaxing, and it’s worth it.
